THE TROUBLE AT WAIHI.
(Per Press Association.) Waihi, September 27. The boilers and machinery, preparatory to making a start next Wednesday, arc undergoing inspection by the Inspector' of Machinery. A partial inspection of underground conditions and an examination of the electric pumps have also been made to-day. The water has now reached No. 10 (mine) level, which is not so high as was generally expected* The Miners Union has been registered under the Arbitration Act. It is rumoured that a contingent of Karangahake miners intends coming'here on Wednesday, When the mine re-opens, to make a demonstration against the strikers.
STRIKE PAY
Wellington, [September 27. The Federation of Labour executive has decided to increase th© strike pay by 20 per cent., making it £2 per week for married men.
KAFFIR LABOUR
AN UNFOUNDED CANARD

Speaking .at Petone to-night, Mr Seariple said that the London shareholders of the Waihi Company were desirous of introducing Kaffir labour in the place of the miners on strike. The Government had been approached with the object of getting the poll tax removed, but had declined. The Federation of Labour now believed that the London shareholders contemplated paying the poll tax and sending out Kaffirs to work the mines. The men oh strike were prepared to fight for the next ten years. Interviewed concerning Mr Semple's statement that the London shareholders of the Waihi Company had approached the Government with a view to getting the poll tax removed so that Kaffirs could be employed to work the mines, Mr Massey said: "It is an ab- , solute falsehood. That is all I have to say."
