TIM ARU-CHRISTCHURCH RACE. WON BY SUTHERLAND (OPAWA). (Per Press Association.) Christchurch, September 26. The Tiraaru to Christchurch cycle ,road race took place to-day in fine weather, 101, riders competing. The results were as follows: J. Sutherland (Opawa), 35min 1. IT. G. Cook (Marshlands), 38min, 9. Official times were: Sutherland, ohr 38min 31 2-ssec; Cook, shr 39min 31 3-ssec; Prebhles, shr 41min 32 2-ssec; Ooulan, shr 38min 5 2-ssec. H. Henderson (Wanganui),' 7min, with shr 20min 31 sec, about 10 rninlites better than the existing record, put up in 1910, secured fastest time, and E. Wall (Halswell), with 9min start, seoonred second fastest time, in shr 32min 27sec.
J. Sutherland (Opawa) is twenty-four years of age. He started in the big race in 1909 and 1910, being on 45min and 27min respectively, but ho had bad luck. He said that he rode with Gook throughout. The ride was solid, and the roads in parts were a bit loose, but the last bit on the grass was a tough struggle. G. Cook, who rode in the race for the first time, finished just behind the -winner. He said that the ride was rough and the roads in patches pretty ( bad. It was necessary to pick the way carefuKy. “It was too solid for mo in the first half,” was the remark of J. F. Prebble, who finished third, “but I stuck to them. The roads were pretty good and the race pretty solid.”
G. G. Henderson (Wanganui), the fastest rider, has been riding for eight years, and last year ho obtained third fastest time. He had two spills, one a bad one, after passing Geraldine, when ho fell over McTeigue. industrialunrcst
