The annual meeting of the New Zealand Employers' Federation opened here to-day, Mr W. Hopkirk president, being in the chair. The following officers were elected: President, W. Hopkirk; vice-president,. T. Shailer Weston; treasurer, R. A. Scott; trustee, W. H. Bennett; auditor, W. C. Stephens, F.P.A.; Parliamentary Committee, members of the Advisory Board and C. M .Banks, S. S. Kirkcaldie, H. F. Allen, L. R. Partridge, W. L. Thompson, A. E. Donne, C. N. Cathie, jun., and W. Allan.^ NEW DISCOVERY MINE. Reef ton, September 25. Bienvorth's New Discovery Mine, at :i trial crushing, gave £65 worth of gold from nine tons, without cyanide. The result is very satisfactory. The irospectors, while searching round the .'i!d Russell and Dillon mines, in the Wait:ihi Valley, struck a remarkably ;ood outcrop. (Ai strong local syndi'.ito has been formed to undertake acive operations. The mines in the old (ays gave good results, without cyanide, but the stone ciit out. The new Mud is expected to be the lost lode.
BACK BLOCKS LOCAL BODIES
Te Kuiti, September 25
A conference of back-blocks local 'todies was held here to-day. The -.Vhangamomonona, Kaitcte, ; Kawhia, and Waitomo Counties, and the Taunanmui and Te Kuiti Boroughs were represented. It was decided to form a Backblocks Local Bodies Association, with Mr A. Scholes as president, and Mr P. Mora as secretary; Itoading, native lands, hospital matters and the general policy of roading were discussed. A further conference is to be held at Ohura in January next, when remits from various bodies will be received and discussed, and recommendations made to the Government accordingly. ATTEMPT AT ABSCOND.
Wellington, September 25
Charles Fish, who is awaiting sentence on a charge of purloining a set of statutes while a Government servant, together with his son Frederick Fish, came before Mr Riddel, S.M., this morning to show why their recognisances should not be estreated, as the former, while out on bail, was arrested on a. steamer about to leave Auckland for Suva. The son stated that he was not aware that his father intended to abscord. His father had suffered considerable mental stress, and hardly' appreciated what he was doing. The Magistrate said that he would not estreat the bail, but the expenses incurred must bo paid by the surety. THE NAVY LEAGUE, Wellington, September 25.
Tlic conference of the New Zealand Navy League concluded its business to-day. The following resolutions were adopted :—That the conference communicate with the head office of the League in London, asking if it is possible for one or more of the Navy League raissioners now visiting Canada to come to New Zealand, and, if possible, to (Australia; also that an opinion lie invited from the branches as to the possibility of their contributing towards the expense of an organising secretary, who would lecture and form new branches where possible, and generally assist branches ; that a wall card, setting forth the objects of the League, 1)0 procured for placing in schools,; that where the League is not flourish-
ing or a branch does not exist, the Chambers of Commerce and prominent citizens be approraehed and requested to form branches or deliver patriotic addresses, with the object of assisting the League.
