ILL-TREATMENT OF A GIRL.
o THREATS OF SHOOTING AND ROASTING ALIVE.
Melbourne, September 21. A girl named Birch, aged 15 years, has been living with Mr John "Wood’s family for nine years at Oakley, A man named William Birch recently came to Oakley and claimed her as his daughter. The family objected, and the girl refused to go with him, but the girl disappeared and returned next morning. It is alleged Birch waylaid her and threatened to shoot her unless she accompanied him. Terrified, she consented, and he took her to a place where a large heap of sticks was gathered and compelled her to remove most of her clothes. He shockingly alltreated her, and after threatening to roast her on the fire she ultimately escaped. ‘ , The police found the ashes of a fire containing charred remain’s and part of a rifle. A doctor pronounced the remains to be human (male).
