Princo Arthur of Connaught has been invested by the Mikado with the Order of the Garter.
Mr. H. Burmester, who has been spending a week in Dunedin, roturned by mailtrain last evening. Mr Peter Bowling has been elected general secretary of the Illawarra Coal Miners' Association. The Duke of Connaught has., concluded his Atlantic-to-Pacific tour. Ho was highly pleased with the evidence of Royalty, and impressed with Canada's marvellous expansion.
Mr R. Modlin, a well-known New Zealand accountant, has accepted the managing directorship of the Australian Guarantee Corporation, says a Sydney cable. Mr J. J. Weir, until recently chief clerk at .Taihape railway station, has beeu promoted to the position of auditor, in which capacity lie 'will pay periodical visits to this district.
Councillor Henry Shaw, the wellknown Auckland accountant, has decided to present his valuable collection of MSS. and books to the Auckland Public Library. Mr. J. K. Poole, who for a number of years carried on the calling of a bookmaker in. New Zealand, and who was one of the oldest pencillers in the Southern Hemisphere, has died in Sydney.
The marriage of Miss Jane Kay Mason, third daughter of the late Mr. H. Mason and Mrs. Mason, of Gladstone, and.Mr, Herbert Perciyal Webb,- son of Mr. and Mrs. Webb, Wellington, at Masterton, is reported by the 'Age.' Rev. L. Thompson, of Carterton Presbyterian Church, conducted, the marriage service. Mr T> McGregor, late of the firm of Jones and McGregor, of Bulls, died (Suddenly on Wednesday in Wellington, Where he has been living since ho left Bulls. Deceased was aged about 50 years, and had been' suffering from heart trouble for some time. Mr. . C. Lepper, secretary of the Taranaki Hospital Board, has completed the tenth anniversary of his tenure of the post. During this period Mr Lepper has not been absent from a single meeting of the Board, and has only been away from the office for five days. Several of the members, in congratulating Mr Lepper on his unique record, referred in enthusiastic terms to the tact and excellent .business ability which ho had brought to bear in what was a what difficult position to hold.
Tho. death; i& announced afc Ponsonby, Auckland, of Mr. J. W. Matthows, at the age of 72 years. The deceased, gentleman was appointed manager of the Bank of New Zealand at Riverton in 1870, and stayed there until 1878, ■•■ when he was transferred to Milton, .where Mrs. Matthews died. Shortly afterwards he was appointed managoru of the- Gisborno branch, which position he hold until failing health compelled him to retire in 1893.

A portrait of the late Colonel Sir Thomas Gore Browne, C. 8., Governor of New Zealand from 1855 to 1861, has been presented to Parliament by the Prime f Minister. 1 In a covering letter" to 'Sir s 'Arthur'"Giirn'iiess, ilt m" Massey says it is the intention of the Government to secure a complete set of portraits of New Zealand Governors for hanging in Parliament Buildings.:' Sir Arthur Guinness informed the House on Tuesday that the portrait had i been received, and arrangements made for hanging it in the! Parliament Library until the new buildings are completed. The marriage of Miss Joyce Wilson, eldest daughter of the late Walter .Wilson,' Esq., Watford, Hertfordshire, England, and of Mrs Wilson, Eltham, to Mr J. A: Duffill, Eltham. was solemnised in All Saints' Church, Eltham, on Wednesday, by the Rev. G. W. Dent.- Qwinof to a family bereavement, , the wedding celebrations were of the quietest and most informal character, the guests : comprising only relatives and a few intimate friends. The Countess of Liverpool, the wife of the newly-appointed Governor of New Zealand, like one or two of. her predecessors, notably Lady Ranfuriy and Lady Plunket, is well-known in Irish society. She is a member of one of the best-known families, her parents being Viscount and Viscountess Monck. Her mother is a daughter of the Earl of Clonmell. There are no children (states an English correspondent) and the heir to the Earldom is Lord Liverpool's half-brother, the Hon. Gerald F. Savile Foljambo, who is 34 years of age, and has seen service in South Africa with his regiment, the 3rd Battalion of the Princess of Wales' Own. /
