Mabel Mona Parker, charged with perjury at tho Christchurch Magistrate’s Court, was committed for trial. It was alleged that at the inquest touching the death of her child she .stated that she was the wife of Ernest John Stokes, and signed her name as Stokes to her deposition. She also gave the child’s name as Stokes. Accused was eighteen years old in February last, and approached the deputyregistrar of births, marriages and deaths and attempted to rectify the error.
The Lyttelton Harbour Board has received a letter from the Under-Sec-retary for Internal Affairs, stating that at the request of the Royal Commission on Empire trade, to visit the Dominion early next year, it was desired that all information likely to be of uso to tho commission should be collected and transmitted to London. The Board has decided to call a meeting of all interested in the subject for next Monday.
Alfred Wheal, charged at Christchurch with having attempted to commit suicide by taking poison last night, has been remanded.
The young woman, Josephine Kennelly, was committed for trial at Invercargill for stabbing James Potts with a hat pin, which penetrated to his lungs. Potts has since been seriously ill, and is still in a dangerous condition.
The manager’s house on the Hon. J. D. Ormond’s Karamu farm, near Napier, was totally destroyed by fire yesterday afternoon. Tho manager and the farm employees fought hard to extinguish the flames, but a. high wind was blowing, and in a short time the place was totally destroyed. Very little of the contents were saved, and Mr Ormond and Ids manager will lose heavily. The insurance on the house was £3OO.
Nearly twenty youths were before Mr Kenrick, S.M., at Eltham yesterday, for failing to comply with the Defence Act. Four were given an opportunity to make up their arrears. Six were fined 10s and 7s costs, two were fined 20s and 7s costs, and one 40s and 7s costs. Several were convicted without a fine, and .some charges were ■ withdrawn.
