RESIDENTS IN STATE OF TERROR

(Per Press Association.) Waihi, 'September 17. The evidence in the charges against Parry, McLennan, Opie, and .Melrose were continued until 10 o’clock last night. Detective Cooney said Parry and McLennan were beyond doubt the most prominent in the crowd at Waikino. The attitude of the strikers was very aggressive and he had cautioned several not to follow the man Stone about, but they said the police could do their worst. Residents of the town were reduced to a state of terror. On September 2nd the position looked ugly. He did not know Parry had brought the crowd down to Waikino. In answer to McLennan, witness said he had not seen him in any demonstration since. * In answer to Parry witness said the men who came from Waihi were Parry’s crowd, and it was a good thing for Parry and the strikers that they went no further. Ho believed there would have been trouble but for the police. He gaves the names of persons terrified by strikers’ insulting epithets. Four constables corroborated Detective Ooonev’s evidence.

This morning witnesses stated that the position had got to such a stage that police protection was necessary.
