Mr. Astburj went to the poll as an Independent Liberal and Mr Wilkinson as an Independent Oppositionist. Prior to Lie last election in December last the boundaries of the district were enlarg od by the inclusion of Manaia, Okaiawa, etc., and as a result over 1000 additional votes were polled. On the I other hand the present roll contains somewhere like one thousand names less than the last main roll. 1908 ELECTION— FIRST BALLOT.

The last meeting in the election cam paign was held last evening in the Town Hall, when the Government candidate addressed the largest meeting yet hold hero. Although there were a few interruptions, on the whole he received a good hearing, but the meeting broke up without tlie usual complimentary votes being passed. This morning the polling is going on very actively. Motor-cars and vehicles are extremely plentiful, and keen interest is being taken. The supporters ol each candidate profess the utmost confidence in winning, and thej general opinion now is that the con-1 test will probably prove very close.
