A strong gale helped the riders in the earlier stages and.retarded them in the latter part of the race. Upham had 40 minutes' start, and, with Tuckwell (48min) was 'prominent from the start and was never overhauled. In a great finish he won by' half a wheel, with Walcott four minutes behind.
