FOOTBALL.

WELLINGTON (19) v. OTAGO (0)

(Per Press Association.) Wellington, September 10. Wellington defeated Otago at Rugby yesterday by 19 points to nil. The game was commenced in a sea of mud and water, but despite these disadvantages some really excellent work was witnessed, the greasy ball and uncertain footing not putting the Wellington side much about, despite their foreign nature. The local rear-guard combination was too superior for the southerners, this factor being responsible for the decisive defeat. CANTERBURY (8) v. WIANGANUI (0) Wanganui, September 16. At Rugby yesterday the touring Canterbury team defeated Wanganui by 8 points (two tries and one converted) to nil. THE LANE SHIELD. POVERTY BAY (6) v. HASTINGS (0).

Gisborne, September 16

A match for the Lane Shield was played here on Saturday .between Hastings and Poverty Bay. The game up to half-time was very even, neither side scoring. In the third quarter Poverty Bay put on two tries, scored by McColl and Ryland. The last quarter was very willing, and two of the Hastings men were ordered off for making offensive remarks to the referee. No further scoring resulted, and Poverty Bay retained the shield by 6 points to nil.
