INTERNAL AFFAIRS. Wellington, September 7. The internal affairs vote was discussed in the House after midnight. Mr Young made an appeal for at tcrition to the teeth of children, and also referred to the harm done by the operations of unqualified itinerant ocenlists. The item of Internal Affairs passed, and the House rose at 1.45.

BLAZE IN WELLINGTON

Wellington, September 6

At 1.20 this morning a lire xvas discovered in a shop in Charlotte street, occupied by Messrs Standige and Co., painters and paperhangers, and con taining a quantity of wall paper, xvhioi, was damaged. The building was owned by Mr Short, tailor, of Kelson. The stock xvas valued at £I7OO, and wa; insured for £SOO in the Yorkshire, and £SOO in the Nexv Zealand Insurance companies. ALLEGED SHEEP-STEALING. Dannevirke, September 7. Two natives named Haaki Hohep" and Ruben Puha, were charged at the Ormondvillo Police Court yesterday with stealing four sheep at South Ma karetu. The evidence of the prosecution shoxved that the natives were seen driving the sheep into the bush in the South Makaretu river bed and afterwards were seen skinning two carcases. Two other sheep driven into the bush were not seen again after being pursued by the natives. Heads wore found in the vicinity of the place where the skinning operation! were performed and .they bore car marks of a settler in the vicinity. Accused when accosted returning home carrying bags of meat sa’.d tbey T bad been pig hunting. Each accused pleaded not guilty, both declaring they killed the animal; because they thought sheep found or Maori land were wild, and only killed the sheep on what they thought xva; Maori land. There xvere no fencer in the locality, and denied they destroyed the earmarks. They xvere committed for trial at Napier.
