A huge fire occurred in Los Angeles. It started through a defective flue in a safe on a pleasure pier, and destroyed the chief buildings of the Ocean Park and Venice Companies. The loss is half a milion sterling. Seven men were caught in the flames at the end of the pier and leaped into the surf. Six were rescued but the seventh, was drowned.

Thrilling rescues were made from the Hotel Decatur, where many occupants were cut off by tllite flames. Firemen saved nine children which were housed within a baby incubator on the pier. Roman Catholics gathered in St. Clement’s Church and offered prayers for the safety of the church building. The wind shifted shortly afterwards and the church was untouched, although the surrounding buildings were destroyed.
