AMERICAN POLITICS.
THE PROGRESSIVES ELATED
New York, September 4
The elections for the State of V ormont proved a disappointment to the Progressive Party. Fletcher, a regular Republican candidate, failed to secure election by a sufficient majority. Fie polled 17,000' against 12,000 polled tor Howe (a Democrat). Metzger (Progressive) only secured 1700 votes. Ihe Republican House will now be obligee. to elect a governor. Political students emphasise the tact that when Vermont’s Republican majority falls below 25,000 the Republican party is always defeated at the following Presidential election. New York, September 4. The Progressive vote in Vermont was 10,000. Earlier returns were erroneous. The Progressives are elated.
