THE WELLINGTON CONFERENCI

(Per Press Association.) Wellington, May 22

At the local bodies’ conference the Hon. G. W. Russell stated that tin Executive had agreed to set up four committees: (1) Municipal, (2) Loca Government Board and Provincial Council, (8) proposed amalgamation oi bodies, ( I) education, hospitals, charitable aid and smaller harbours. He also intimated that the Executive had come to the conclusion that the larger harbours must he eliminated from the Bill. Discussion was then resumed Mr John Stndholme, Ashburton, delivered the most effective address ®p far and was loudly applauded. He was in favour of reforming the system. Messrs Walker ' (Dunedin), Fisher (Southland) and Williams (Bullet) supported the scheme. Mr Ebenezer Allen (Auckland) thought road boards should be allowed to continue. They could eventually be merged with counties. Mr Armstrong (Wairau) favoured the setting up of a commission to reframe boundaries. The conference then adjourned till 2 p.m.
