LOCAL GOVERNMENT.
At a special meeting of the Wairnami County Council (Christchurch) lid I to consider the proposed Local Government Bill, the following resolutions were passed ;—(1) That the- Council approves of the general principles of the proposed Local Government Bill. (2) That the Council approves of the abolition of land drainage hoard;:, small harbour boards, education boards and hospital and charitable aid boards, as provided for in the proposed Bill, believing that the work could be more efficiently and economically done 1 v committees of the proposed Provincial Council< (3) That the Council strongly objects to the Local Government Board as set up in the proposed Loon! Government Bill, and Considers; that the powers proposed to he vested in that body should he vested in the Gov-crilor-in-Council. (4) That the area of the proposed North Canterbury Provincial District should be reduced--(5) That, the term of office should not |w3 less than three years. (6) That the minimum rate of subsidy to comity councils should not lie less than 5s in the pound. (7) That in Clause 131, Sub-section 2a, a subsidy of pound for pound should be substituted for- 10s in the pound, and in Sub-section, .2h a subsidy: of 24s for each pound prs at present) bo substituted for ■-2,0 s for every pound; and that SUb'-se’ctiop, 3 of the same clause ho omitted. (8) That provision should he made in the Bill giving Provincial Councils, power to raise moneys by way of loan for building purposes, and that a subsidy of pound for pound should lie paid oat of the consolidated fund on moneys so raised. (9) That the chairman lie appointed to go to Wellington as a del ogate from this Council to place the foregoing resolutions before the Minister of Internal Affairs at the coming conference.
