John Albert Tickncr, labourer, 30, committed suicide by hanging himself in a wood shed. The body was found early this morning. From a note left in a pocket-book it appeared that deceased was unhinged through breaking off his engagement on Monday. Evidence at the inquest disclosed that deceased was a sober man and no other cause was apparent. Deceased came from Auckland. LOCAL GOVERNMENT.

Mr Justice Cooper to-day heard an appeal from the Crown against Magistrate Riddell’s dismissal of recent cases under the Defence Act. The Magistrate had held that proceedings against, offenders should he taken under the regulations and not under section 51 of the Defence Act, and, further, that, as personal service varied in character and spread over an annual period, defendants should at least have had an opportunity afforded them during each training year of rendering the required service within tout year. The .Judge remarked if the Magistrate was right the whole scheme of the Act was destroyed. The Sol-icitor-Genera! concurred and added that the effect of the decision was also absolutely subversive of all military
discipline*. In the course of argument the Judge s.-iid the position if the decision was uphold would ho like comic opera. The case is proceeding. FORMING A 6AWD.
