The Government is issuing funded stock at 4 per cent, interest, which is an increase of a quarter per cent. At the New Zealand Association’s reception in honour of Sir Joseph Ward’s visit there was a large and representative attendance. Speeches of a complimentary character were made.
F. ]). Brown, ex-manager of the Singer Sewing Machine Company, has been remanded on a further charge of inciting an officer of the company to steal and destroy the cashbooks and other books and papers showing too
transactions of the company, with intent to defraud. Bail of £SOO was allowed.
Burglars made a haul at Wehrlt’s jeweller’s shop, in George Street, smashing the window and stealing £4O worth of goods. The drought is severe in the Batli-
urst and adjoining districts. Farmers are not sowing their crops, and dairy cows have been sold as low as 9s a head.
