THE MAYOR’S PROPOSALS.
The newly-elected Mayor of Stratford is not wasting any time in bringing forward the proposals he referred to in his platform policy before the election. At a special meeting of the Council held last evening Mr Kirkwood gave notice to move that the Borough take steps to raise a loan of £15,000 for various works, and that the matter be considered at a special meeting of the Council to be held on May 15th. It is very generally admitted that the time has arrived when it will be in the best interests of Stratford to effect certain improvements to the streets and to carry out other works which can only be undertaken out of loan money. This being so it ■remains for the Council to place before the burgesses carefully-thought-out and reasonable proposals on sound business lines, and if they do this there is little doubt but what the ratepayers will afford the necessary support. Trie details of the proposals now brought forward have yet to be gone into and discussed, and until then it is hardly possible to express a definite opinion, though generally speaking the proposals made appear to lie on quite sound lines. That Mr Kirkwood is in earnest in what he proposes is evidenced by the fact that he also proposes to cut the water rate to be collected down to the minimum actually required to pay interest on the water loan.
