LOCAL GOVERNMENT BILL.
To-day the Stratford County Council is sitting to discuss the Local Government Bill, a measure which is likely to be very much' before the country for some time to come. It proposes many vital changes and at yesterday’s meeting of the New Plymouth Harbour Board Mr Maxwell drew attention to the desirability of obtaining larger representation at the forthcoming conference. It is quite possible that it strong representations are made something in this direction may be done. The other day the Premier’s attention was drawn to a criticism of the Bill by the North Canterbury Board of Education, and replying he said: “The Local Government Bill is a framework. We do not say it is like the laws of the Medes and Persians—unalterable. lam very familiar with tiie great advantage that education boards, as constituted, have been to the education system. The North Canterbury Board is quite right in pointing out how necessary it is that the control of education should not be in the hands of men who have not specialised. The education boards will be able to make their representations when the conference meets in Welling l ton to discuss the Bill. People" have been calling out for a Local Government Bill. Something has been prepared, and the Government hopes to get the benefit of the assistance of many men who have devoted themselves to local government work.
