OBITUARY.

HENRY WHITTEN GOUGER

The death occurred at New Plymouth this morning of Mr. Henry Whitten Gouger, aged about seventyfive years. Deceased was very well known locally, where he was for many years employed as clerk to Mr. John Leydon. Before that he had owned a farm on the Wanganui River, and left this to take up school teaching. A few months ago the late Mr. Gouger forwarded to the Stratford Public Library a copy of a work which'sets.forth in detail the prominent part played by Robert Gouger, his father, in the founding of South Australia. The editor of "The Founding of South Australia" writes in his preface: "Honours are divided among the claimants to be: founders of South Australia. Edward Gibbon Wakefield was the first to set forth the principles of the new form of colonisation; Mr. Gouger, the secretary of the South Australian Association, up the idea, and .worked it into practical shape; Colonel Torrcns brought experience and influence to bear to make the scheme popular, and ensured its acceptance by the Government." Of Mr. Robert Gouger, Edward Gibbon Wakefield writes: "The successful issue of his long contests with the judgments of ignorance, the insults of pride, and the delays of idleness, should be a lesson of encouragement to the advocates of i:'ul projects." The late Mr. Henry Gouger is the only surviving son of the man who was associated with the founding of South Australia. Little is known of his early career by those who were associated with him in Stratford, but he is known to have been educated .at Charterhouse School, mid to have had a very varied career.
