A youth named Joseph Christie, for attempting to escape from Mt. Eden goal was to-day sentenced to seven days’ close confinement. At the inquest on a young woman named May Miller, who died in a hotel on Tuesday, a verdict was returned of death by lysol poisoning, self-administered while temporary deranged. There were one hundred cases of whisky stored in the building, and : t required smart work by the brigade to prevent the fire reaching them. The damage was confined to the office and the contents. The building, which was owned by Mrs A. J. White’s estate, was insured for £IBOO in the \ ictoria Office, and the contents for £IOOO in the New Zealand Insurance Co. - Christchurch, May 1. Walter Richard Sadler, who was remanded to Christchurch from the Magistrates’ Court at Wellington, yesterday made his appearance before Mr H. W. Bishop, S.M., at the Christchurch Court to-day. Owing to the late arrival of the Mararoa, it was not till past 12 o’clock that the prisoner entered the dock, and by that time expectation, which had been noticeable earlier in the morning, had died down and the Court was unattended by curious spectators. The prisoner, who was carefully attired in a green suit, looked nervous and pale, his pallor being accentuated by his shock of disordered brown hair, while his eyes rolled uneasily about the Court. The charges brought against him were to the effect that on two occasions, viz., on April 28th at Wellington, and on April Bth at Kaiapoi, ‘he used a certain instrument for unlawful purposes on a girl. On the application of Chief Detective Bisliop he was remanded till Wednesday, May Bth. Bail was allowed accused in £l5O and two sureties of £75 each, this being the same bad which he had been allowed by the Wellington Court. Reefton, May 2.

Tapps’ tailor’s shop was gutted by fire last night. The stock and fittings, etc., - were destroyed. Pedrazzi, dentist, next door, also suffered. Ell, Postmaster-General, who is visiting Wanganui, was waited upon this morning by a deputation from the Chamber of Commerce which urged the completion of the WanganuiRaetihi ami Wanganui-Pipiriki telephones. Other matters were also discussed with the Minister, who leaves for Feilding to-morrow. Mr Ell visited the harbour works and expressed surprise, at the excellent results so far obtained i in improving the port, and generally with the progress of the district. The weather, which has been exceptionally wet and stormy for nparly a fortnight now, lias greatly improved.
