MIDHIRST GUN CLUB.

A SUCCESSFUL OPENING DAY.

The Midhirst Gun Club held its opening day on Thursday afternoon, and was fortunate in getting a fine afternoon, the only drawback being a strong wind, which- considerably troubled some reputably good men at the clays. About thirty-five shooters

and friends turned up to see the opening, and a fair number of ladies were also present. The secretary, Mr C. E. Ssabright, and committee had everything in good order and right up to date.

Being the first shoot, the committee decided to pick sides, and the captain, Sir N. J. Hamblyn and Mr J. Carter, vice, each selected a strong team, and the respective skippers thought they eacli had a “moral.” Taking into consideration it was the first time most of the members had fired at the inanimate birds, some really good shooting was put up. Mr A. Lineham, Ron Shotter and W. Wing Keo secured four out of their five birds in first round, and in the second round Mr Harry Graj astonished the natives by putting up top score and getting all his Jiirds. With a hit of practice the Midhirst Gun Club should turn ont some really first-class shots, and Stratford will have to look to its laurels when the next Taranaki championship comes along. About 4 p.m. the referee gave the order to cease firing, and an adjournment was made for afternoon tea, which the ladies had thoughtfully provided, and I think everyone present enjoyed the nice things supplied. Before returning to the “trap” the chairman, Mr W. White, thanked the ladies on behalf of the committee and members of the club for their kindness in providing refreshments, and called for three hearty cheers for the ladies, which were given with much vigour. After completion of second round scores were tallied up and it was found that the vice-captain’s (Mr J. W. Carter’s) team had rather easily won by 32 points. Everyone enjoyed themselves and all went away satisfied that tin; Midhirst Gnu Club has come to stay.
