SOUTHLAND RUGBY UNION. (Per Press Association A Invercargill, April 26. At to-night’s meeting of the Southland Rugby Union the following motion was unanimously canned:—“That this union heartily approves of the notires of motion to bo brought forward by the Hawke’s Bay Union at the annual general meeting cf the Council ol the New Zealand Rugby Union in reference to alteration of the rules dealing with professionals; also canceling affiliation to the English Union.” It was resolved to instruct ' the Southland delegates to the annual 1 ' meeting of the N.Z. R.U. to' heartily ! Support the measures. ' ■>- TARANAKI FOOTBALL A ASSOCIATION. • The annual general meeting of the iaranaki Football Association 'was' held at Eltham on Thursday last. Pte-i' sbut; Rev. - Stent (in • the chair),Messrs. Foreman (Kaponga), 1 ' Profit -i Aioa, and Burke (Okaiawa), Hazeltine' " and Sterrott (Hawera): and GwiJliffi and Shepherd (New Plymouth). The secretary (Mr. W. Melville), in his annual report, referred to the succcGo of the past season, both as regards the finances and the game itself. At present there was a fair sum to the credit of the Association, while the liabilities were nil. The game had advanced considerably. The teams competing had gained by two clubs, and file standard of football played had improved. Only one representative match had eventuated. That was against Wanganui, at Hawera, when the home team were victorious by the margin of four goals to two. No team had been sent away to compete for the Brown Shield, the players not being able to get away to make the trip to Canterbury. The balance-sheet, as • adopted, showed receipts to have been CI3 2s lOd, and the expenditure £5 12s, leaving cash in hand £7 10s lOd. The election of officers' resulted as follows-Patron, Hon. T. Mackenzie; ; president, Hon. C. W. Caracross,. M. ; vice-presidents, Mr. H. Batts, Mr. W. Swadling, Dr. Walker, Rev. Colyile, Father Bergen, Dr. Harr;son, Mr. H. Bullock, Dr. Carbery; chairman, Rev. Stent; hon. secretary, and treasurer, Mr. W. Melville; hon. ' auditor, Mr. Campbell; vice-presid-' cuts to the N.Z.F.A., Hon. C. W. Carncross and Dr. E. A. Walker. _ Correspondence was read from the N. A., stating that entries for the Brown Shield would close on May Ist, and also notifying several alterations to the rules, regarding which the Taranaki Union had.no report to make. , Okaiawa were admitted to membership of the union.
Various Resolutions. \ arious resolutions were passed, as follows:—(.1) “That no team he allowed to play in the cup final unless the currant season’s affiliation fee be paid previous to that date; (2) that an executive committee lie formed for the northern end from Eltham as centre, to New Plymouth northwards and same to Hawera, and surrounding district as the southern end, such committees to arrange fixtures, etc., and settle minor disputes subject to the approval of assembled union; (3) that a committee be formed of Messrs G willing Shepherd and Rev. Stent to tiraft a set of rules for the union; (4) that tlie junior cup be open to .schoolboy teams affiliated to the union.” A hearty 7 vote of thanks was accorded to the hon. secretary for his untiring energy, and for the able manner in which he had conducted the aka rs of the union during the season—lds first as secretary. Votes- of thanks to the press throughout Taranaki for reports of meetings and matches, and to the chairman for urosiding, closed the meeting.
