The Totalisator Commission examined Mr. Knox, chairman of the Australian Jockey Club, who said that from the Club’s point of view the totalisator would have advantages and disadvantages. It cost £40,000 to instill the system at Randwick. He was opposed to the totalisator if it meant Governmental or political control of racing. He had no doubt that the majority of race-goers favoured the machine. It would result in the suppressing of big punters, and would probably cause an improvement in the breeding of thoroughbreds. About 670,000 was yearly bet at Randwick. Apart from expenses, the Club now took £120,000 annually. If it got 7\ per cent, from the totalisator takings} it would get about £40,000 above ex-j ponses. . (Received 25, 8.5 a.m.) Sydney, April 25. At the Totalisator Commission, Sol Green, bookmaker, thought the totalisator would deteriorate thoroughbred breeding. The best mare was not bought in New Zealand, where the totalisator existed, if the New Zealand horses sent here to be sold had been bred in New South Wales or Victoria they could not have been bought at any price. As a bookmaker he absolutely favoured the totalisator, providing proprietary clubs got nothing* out of it. As a horse-breeder he certainly opposed it. His betting turnover was about £300,000 yearly. He made a sporting offer that if the Government guaranteed 5 per cent, on his turnover he would give 3 per cent, -of ■t to charity. The sporting editor of the newspaper Sun approved the totalisator liecause it was the host method of hotting, but bookmakers should be allowed to compete with the machine for the good of.the game. He estimated that 925,000 people annually attended lace meetings round Sydney. The amount of hotting at these meetings was about six millions. The totalisator would make for purer racing. He saw no objection to women betting. CITY AND SUBURBAN HANDICAP. (Received 25, 10.30 a.m.) London, Vpr ; 1 24. The City and Suburban Handicap resulted :—Chili 11. 1, Lonawand 2, Muscats 3.
