BIBLE IN SCHOOLS.

(Re.r Press Association.)

Timaru, April 23

A rumour that the secularists intended to try to capture a Timaru school committee, because Hie outgoing committee had permitted ministers to give scripture lessons, caused an unusually large number of householders to attend the annual meeting. The opponents of scripture were smothered when opposing a vote of thanks proposedy to the ministers. Dunedin, April 23.

In the course of a few remarks at the householders’ meeting in the George Street school last night the Rev. G. Knowles Smith said lie noticed a report in the press that the president of the Primitive Methodist Conference was associated with the Primate and others as vice-president in a movement to introduce the New South AVales system of Bible in schools into New Zealand. He wished to say that the use of his name, as tne president of the Primitive Methodist Conference, was entirely without his authority. He had never been consulted in the matter, and, moreover, when the attempt was made they would find him on the platform very much against it.
