Wellington, April 19.^ The Nautical Court absolved the captain of the steamer Himitangi from any carelessness in connection with the recent strand ng at the Chat-hams-, and returned his certificate. The Court was of opinion that Captain Cowan was careful in His management of the vessel. The Court added that the captain, in leaving a- fireman tn take the anchor watch, only followed a practice which had hitherto prevailed on the steamer. The two nautical assessors, however, were strongly of opinion that .such a practice could not be allowed in future. Dr. McArthur, g.M.; held that the word “seaman” in the Act included “fireman.’'’ No order was made as to costs. N.Z.S. CO. PURCHASE. .London, April 19. The New Zealand Shipping Company has signed the purchase of the whole of Houlder Brothers’ Company’s Australasian business, including four large steamers. Houlder’s preference shares are quoted at 85s, 87s 6d.
