THE SCHOOL BUILDING.
A SHORT DESCRIPTION. In their speeches last night the speakers contented themselves with merely referring to the excellent appearance of the building and its fittings, without going into details. Wo might mention that the whole of the contracting was done by Messrs. Boon Bros., of New Plymouth, and was admitted -by the. School Committee that this was done “well and faithfully.” The building took five months to construct, this being 1 ' slightly over the contract time, but this was solely due to the very had weather. The architects were Messrs. Sanderson and Griffiths. of New Plymouth. Much of the good appearance of the building is due to the superiority of the brick work, an excellent effect being obtained by tuck pointing in white. The asbestos tiles, too, are decidedly ornamental. The building contains six classrooms, but by the expediency of employing a folding partition, two of the class rooms can he turned into one. In this room last evening the speeches wore delivered. There are six double door entrances, and these are so designed that it is considered impossible in'ease of fire for the children to be unable to get nut, unless under very unfavourable circumstances. Iho majority- of these open outwards. In addition to the classrooms there is the Headmaster’s office, a room for the teachers, and well appointed lavatories. There: is also a room widen will he used ns a library. The blackboards, which arc attached to the wall, the blinds and general fittings give evidence of the up-to-date-ness of the edifice. A general air of cleanliness is imparted from the plastered walls. In the winter the classrooms should he particularly cosy, as the heating arrangements, Carron stoves, should conduce to the general comfort of the scholars.
