WHANGAMOMONA NOTES.

.((From Our Own Correspondent.) Winter seems to be pressing on us, not unawares, hut with a chilly, wet severity, a fitting though unpleasant close to a very unseasonable summer. Tho Whanga Saddle is being relieved of much of its heavy traffic, the railway authorities are making use now of the.tunnel to bring bridge timber, etc., in, the materia being sledged along the formation from the end of the rails to the site of the first bridge. We hope very shortly to have a re- j gular service between Mange re Road and Stratford, to the mutual advantage of both places. The new hotel is in a forward state of completion now, the plumber and | the paperhanger being hard at it; the | new bank, also, is beginning to wear a! smart look, with its fancy windows and i imposing front. I Two new cottages are bei ig erected close to the township, one for Mr. Armstrong and tire other for Messrs. McCluggage Bros. Mr. A. Hassall returned here to-day with his bride, and received a lively tin-kettling by his single friends tonight. Mrs. Hassall is not unkrown to Whanga people, she having spent a two months’ holiday here during the summer, which time she made many friends all through the district. I hear that the local ports club’s balance-sheet shows a satisfactory credit balance over the Easter Monday sports. The day was fearfndv wet, so they have reason for gratification at the’ result of their first sports meeting. Mr. Turnbull, of the Stratford Office staff of the Public Works Department, has been transferred to Whangamomona, to assist Mr. H. Strombon, our local road overseer. Preparations for the commencement of the Tahora railway tunnel arc well in hand; tramways are being laid, water courses diverted, etc., an 1 quite n township has sprung up in tho vicinity. Mr. A. Brodie, who was taken to Stratford Hospital last ween, is reported to ho making slow recovery. Mr. Peter Lawson, who had his jaw badly smashed by a kick from a horse, expects to be away from work at least s’x or eight weeks; his will be a painful and slow process; the wonder is, though, that lie was not killed outright, only his, presence of mind saved him from a worse fate. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co.„ Ltd., held their monthly saM at Kohuratahi last Friday, but business was not a a brisk as usual, the failure , to get a burn through their hush this season has no doubt damped the speculative spir t of the farmers.

It is quite possible that icxt mer will see Whangamomona and Ongaruc linked by a regular coach service. It is a venture with great possibilities. and should grove an unmixed blessing to our‘distret. Tbo concrete piers of the first railway bridge this side of the Saddle have been put in, and tbo material for the other bridge is coming to hand fast. At last we are in sight of the time when tho train will vsit our. town. Mr. W. G. Fargio is here on a short business visit from Oh turn. Mr. Dan Sutherland left here yesterday on a trip to Scotland. He expects to-arrive hack about Christmas time.
