ROAD SPORTS.

A very pleasant gathering took place on Denbigh Road on Thursday, list inst., the attraction being a local sports meeting. The weather, widen was beautifully fine, left nothing to be desired in that respect. A good crowd of spectators and competitors assembled in a field adjoining, Kindly lent by Mr Kilpin. A strong committee had been set up, all the members of which worked zealously to make the gathering a thorough success, and 1 think that it may safely be said they succeeded beyond expectations. ' The committee were extremely fortunate in their selection of a secretary, Mr. L. Lyford, who has shown himself to be a most competent and energetic worker. A good programme of events had been prepared, consisting of children’s and ladies’ races, also the usual chopping and sawing events, running and wrestling, etc., all events being well contested. The ladies’ .nail-driving competition produced a good deal of amusement, oeing eventually won by Mrs Hine, who generously donated her prize to the ciiiklrcn’s races. Mr H;no was also present during the day. The committee are indebted to Mr Volzke, wno acted as haudicapper in the sawing and chopping events also to Mr J. Kelly, wno handicapped for the running, and to Mr Kilpin for the use of ids grounds. The following committee had charge of affairs:—Messrs. W. Norton, R. and C. Carroll. W. Mills, W. Mole, F. and A. Askew, M. Lnder's, H. Hnckstep, L. Lyford, and G. Anderson. A ime exhibition saw was given by the Volzke brothers. Messrs. Kelly and Mole had charge of the children’s races- Mr. J. B. Hine, M.P., and Mrs. Hine joined the gatliing for an hour or two, helping greatly in its success. The finance committee find themselves with a good sum in hand after all expenses ate paid.
