TARANAKI HEROES.
MEMORIAL AT NOBMANBY. The Normanby correspondent of the Hawera "Star" writes as follows: lAt the invitation of the Domain Board a good number of residents of the town and district assembled \:\ Victoria Park on Monday afternoon i':>:the purpose of fixing the site, for tiiL' marblo obelisk about to be erected to the memory of the brave men who >i,i\yv their lives for their Queen and conntry in the early days of Taranaki, and thus secured for the present and future generations of settlers this fertile part of the Dominion. Amongst those present were Messrs James Livingston, John Finlay, W. Itowe, .1. Millar, Thomas Robson, and about 20 others. Mr Coslett Johnstone, the hero of Turuturu Mokai, being represented by liis eldest son, Mr ii. Johnstone, and regret was expressed that owing to illness be was unable to I); 1 present, in person. Mr Davies, chairman of the Domain Board, explained the object of the gathering. He pointed out the different suitable sites, and asked those present to vote by a show of hand;; for the one they considered most suitable. After a thorough inspection of the various positions it was decided by a large majority in favour of No. 3, which is situated between the clump of shrubs and the cottage. and will, when the proposed new gates I are erected, be visible from the road l and railway. |
It was also decided that on the me-1 morial cairn to be erected in the Waihi ! Cemetery tlie names of only those , whose remains arc known to lie there should be inscribed, whilst on the park memorial the nanus of all who fell in South Taranaki will be placed. The wood an slab which for so long j has been the only memorial at the i cemetery is to be repaired and var- j nished and placed on the wall in the j Town Hall. Money is still needed for these memorials, and tho chairman of tiie Domain Board or Mr John Finhiy will be pleased to' receive pnhrxrviptior: from friends desiring to further thi: good cause. The obelisk to be placed , in tho park will be on view at Musr: Jones and Sons, High Street, Hawera, for a few days at the end of the pre-
vent week.
