A VETERAN RETIRES.
LIVERPOOL'S HARBOUR-MASTER
A recent issue of the "Liverpool Echo," just to hand, records the retirement of the Liverpool harbourmaster, Mr. H. M. Liardet, father;of
Mr. H. N. Liardet, an old Stratford resident; and ex-Mayor of the town, who is now general manager for New Zealand of the Ocean Accident and Guarantee Corporation.
Mr. Henry M. Liardet retires on a superannuation allowance of £BOO per annum. He joined the Board's service in 1864, was made assistant-Jiarpour-master in 186 S, and harbourmaster'in 1880, holding the position for thirtyone years. The "Echo" speaks iniyeiry high terms of. Mir. Liardct's tactful and devoted service to the Board -of L : verpool, and goes on to state that "Mr. Liardet is the second son of the late Colonel C. F. Liardet, of the Madras Army, and was born at Yizagapatam, British India, Madrai Presidency, in 1834. He -was educated at Bruton Grammar School and Warminster. On leaving school he became a lieutenant of the Indian Government, Serving in the old Indian Navy from 1851 till its abolition. He served during the Pegu war, in Burmah, in 1852, and received the Pegu medal and clasp. He was a lieutenant on "the Assay, the flagship of Sir Henrv Leek, and was at the taking of Reshire and Bushire, in the Persian Gulf, in 1856, for which Jig received the Persian clasp. He held the position of flag lieutenant to Admiral Sir Henry Leek and George Grenville Wcllesley, and wasi witli the first expedition which went up the river Solang, Burmah, to navigate its waters, and received the thanks of the Bengal Government for his arduous services. During the Indian Mutiny, he was at , Bom 7 bay and Scinde. At the conclusion of the Persian war he carried despatches from the Government of Bombay to General Sir James Outram, who commanded the expeditionary field force 1 in Persia. In his official position; in Liverpool Mr. Liardet has seen much of the wonderful development of the dock estate."
