The Premier brought down the house last night when he remarked of the Cabinet that thev had a Scotsman at one end and (H) Ell at the other.
Just before-going to.press, this afternoon Mr. Garrett Wilson informed us that the purse of sovereigns presented to Mr. Joseph McChiggage contained £215 12s 6d, and £75 lias yet to come in. The Prime Minister and the Hon. Russell arrived at New Plymouth bj train from Stratford this morning, and received deputations on local matters. They visit the oil works this afternoon and' leave again by train for Eltham and Manaia.—Press Association.
The Hon. W. J). S. Macdonald tele graphed to Mr Garrett E. Wilsin today as follows:—"I regret exceedingly "that it was not possible for me to accept the cordial invitation of yom League to be present at the social and presentation to Mr. McCluggago last evening. I trust the function was a successful one in every way." Following is the High -Commission-! er's latest report on the butter and cheese market:—The market is qiiiet, and prices are slightly weaker. The average price for the week for choicest N'.Z'. butter was 1245, Australian 120 s, Siberian 120 s, Danish 1295, Argentina 120 s. Cheese: The market is steady. The average price for the week for finest N.Z. cheese was 745. /
The Stanhope Gold Medal for the most heroic action of the year was awarded last month by the Royal Humane Society to Charles C. Hallitlav, sublieutenant -R'.N.R. On November 29, 1910, the Glasgow steamer River Clyde on her homeward voyage was in the Red Sea, going at full speed, when a Chinese fireman, bent on suicide, threw himself overboard. At the risk of being cut to pieces by the propeller, and in spite of the danger arising from the numerous sharks which infest those waters, Halliday, who was second officer of the steamer sprang after the man, but failed to effect a rescue, as the man did not come to the surface. He was himself picked up by a boat from the ship 20 minutes later. Halliday, who has just taken his master's certificate, and entered the service of the Cunard Line, is a son of the Rev. J.
