SHOOTING.
GUN V. RIFLE. The return match between the above clubs was shot on the racecourse yesterday in the presence of a large number of spectators. Clay birds were used on this occasion and after an interesting contest the result was a victory for the weilders of the .303 by 18 points. Starting with a lead of 194 points, it looked any odds on the riflemen, but' at the end of the first stage it was! found that the gunners had reduced this to 73, and i ! t then appeared a good thing for the clay men. However, that element . of— uncertainty ; which constitutes the charm in contests of any kind came, into operation here, and the riflemen improved won- ' derfuljy'jin.-tjhe {second stage; -notably Messrs J. Ritchie, J. McMahon, A. Ferguson, A. Speck and H. Gollop. and;the gunners, not quite sustaining their previous efforts, suffered defeat as above. The thanks of the club are due to .the following dadics for "their Kindliest.; in providing and dispensing afternoon tea on the ground, viz., Mesdames A. Stewart, Campbell, and G. Sangster, and Misses E. Davies and Campbell J !ln addition ;to-.thd.abm'!e, quite a number of the softer sex were prc;;entj thereby adding greatly to the pleasure of both competitors and spectators. Tne final stage of the' BalKstite Competition was got off simultaneously with the above, and on the sealed handicaps being opened it was 1 found that H. Campbell, who had shot most consistently all through, had established his claim to hold this coveted trophy for the current year by a margin of six points from H. R.' Wickham, who, unfortunately, had missed one competition, or otherwise the issue might have been closer. The third place was filled by H. Yoyle, quite a young shot,- who put in the creditable score of 40 yesterday, thereby geting among the, prize-winners. Scores are given below: — Rifle Club. Rifle Score , ... 098 A.
