FIRES.
(Per Press Association.) ,'Greymouth, March 31. A disastrous lire occurred at Runanga early on Saturday morning, when the Co-operative Company's fine building, together with a large stock, was destroyed, nothing being saved. It is surTriised that the fire originated in a chimney near the bakehouse, and it was discovered by a baker. There being no 'fire* appliances, the building had to be let 1 burn. For a time O'Connell's drapery store and Magee's private house deemed certain to go, but willing hands constantly saturated blankets with water and applied them to the buiklihgs. The danger was then averted. Luckily there was no wind, otherwise hVbre damage would have been done. 'lnsurances: On the Cooperative Society's stock £1450, buildings £950. The safe of the company caW through the fire intact. The books were found to be slightly charred, but it is expected that t'hoy will be decipherable.
