BIRD ROAD NOTES.

(From our own Correspondent.) The annual picnic in connection with the Bird Road school took place on Wednesday, March 20th. Luckily a fine week was chosen and although a strong wind was blowing on the particular day, a perfectly sheltered spot was found on Mr Crowe’s ground opposite the school. Early in the morning Messrs Rogers, Kenny, Giddy, Hann and Crowe, of the committee, were busy erecting tables and forms, and supplying coffee and firewood, while the ladies busied themselves cutting sandwiches, so that at 11 o’clock everything was in readiness for the sports to commence. Messrs Hann and O’Reilly acted as judges, Mr S. Reynolds haudicappor, and Mr G. S. Giddy starter. About ten childrens’ races with three prizes attached to each were got off by 12.30, when refreshments were ready. This part of the business was in the capable hands of Mr Cramer, of Stratford, who provided an exceptionally nice tea. Next came bun race, sack race, consolation race, and all the other races till every child had won something while the older ones indulged in stepping the chain, tug-of-war, hop, step and jump, etc. At 2.30 two cases of pears and a lollio scramble changed the scene for a few minutes. “Aunt Sally,” under the genial management of Mr J. Kenny, augmented the funds by £1 Os 6d. The settlers had donated most generously towards the running prizes, £4 19s Gd being collected, and a greater crowd than has ever been at a picnic hero before made the undertaking most sucessful. Adults were charged Is for the day, which included dinner and tea and a share in the fun. In the evening a dance was hold in the schoolroom, Mr G. Coleman, jun., acting as M.C. and music being supplied locally.
