SWIMMING NOTES.

(By IA/mphi Bios.) . . The 50yds distance for the champion Handicap Cup was decided yesterday, thus bringing A.B. a milestone closer to the end of his commission as a writer “in the papers.” After the last race, on Thursday next, A.B. will resume duty as a private citizen and leave writing to the papers to those who are fond of it. ] And of such people many there be. As to the race itself, the starters were:— Masters ... scr Kelly "see Bennett ... Usee. Jcbb ... ... 12sec 1' Whittington ... d2sec | Kivcll was a notable absentee, it r being stated that he was unaware that the race was coming off. Mr W. P. Kirkwood acted as judge,- , and Mr J. F. Watson, in the ( absence of Mr E. B. Stohr as starter and timekeeper. The day was fine and warm, and fthough the water was not on the humid side everybody seemed to enjoy the dip. Bennett, Jebb, and Whittington were well together at the turn.; Kelly was close up at this point, but thereafter he and Whittington fought out an exciting struggle for last place, Kelly winning easily. Jcbb swam nicely and was rewarded with first place, being a short distance ahead of Bennett, behind whom Masters followed close. The time was .41 1-osec, which must he considered very good in the circumstances. Points for the Cup now stand:— Masters 8 Kelly 7 Kivcll 5 Bennett ... ••• 5 Jcbb 5 As might be expected, the Cup is left in an “interesting position,” as a tie for first place in within the reach of everybody. Therefore, there can bo expected a veritable battle of giants over next Thursday’s distance —440yds.
