Second Edition WHANGAMOMONA NOTES.

There will be great excitement in Koliuratahi on Friday ■ evening, when the settlers of the district are giving a banquet in honour of Mr Massey, who proposes to be pro-mat. Messrs Hiuc, Pearce, Okay, and Wilson v. ill lie present—a groat day for !\ohuretain. The Whangamomona Hotel is expected to oe finished in about a months’ time, Mr W. H. Reader, the paperlianger and decorator, being : 1ready at work. Rumour 'Mentions several names for the future pioprietorship of this hotel. x The Bank of Australasia’s new premises arc making great progress, but are being delayed for want of timber. Mrs Calgher and Miss Grace Cal■ghor nave returned, Miss Calgher having been away to receive medical treatment. Mr W. D. Anderson is paying his usual monthly visit to Wnanga. this week. The Public Works people have deserted their settlement at Man gore Road, and have now established themselves at Tahora. Few people outside the district realise the extensive nature of the Public Works settlement. Tahora is now a regular township with residential flats, library, .blacksmith’s shop, and numerous other, accessories. The Whanga sports will be held on Easter Monday. These promise to be a great success. Record nominations have been received—over 40 entries for the chop. Gangs of 1 the Public Works men are now being actively employed on the stretch of country, about twelve miles, between Maugero tunnel and Tahora, and are rapidly proceeding with the railway formation. The Tahora tunnel should be much sooner excavated than that at Mange ro Road, the saddle being broken by a gully, thus enabling four gangs of men to work at it. i There is a batch in Whanga called the Y.M.C.A. It is to be hoped that the members thereof live up to the name. ' Court and Cottier are largely increasing the size of their store at Hurimoana. Miss Price, the assistant teacher at the local school, finishes her duties here to-morrow, being transferred to Lepperton. ■ Mr Mills, the local head teacher, leaves on Saturday for Wellington, whore rumour states he will enter into matrimonial obligations. The levels have been taken and the foundations laid of the new Post Office. Mr Hoddcr, the contractor, intends to proceed with the erection as soon as possible. Mr E. McClnggage is putting in an up-to-date sheep-dip on his farm, on the Whanga Road. ■ Mr J. Fawkuer is erecting a spacious wool shod on his farm on the Mangere Road and intends putting in an up-to-date wohl-press, which will be a groat acquisition to the district. Mr T. Ayhvard, the Whanga saddler, is making additions to his, business, being about to install a now harness machine by Pearson and Reunion. He anticipates a busy cover season. It is reported that two gentlemen from Whanga are leaving on Saturday for Wellington and that both arc to bo married at-the same church and at the same time, and that neither knows of the other’s intentions. The Rev. King, of Toko, hold a largely attended religious service here on Monday last. A strong movement is on foot to establish a permanent Presbyterian Home Missioner in the district.
