The Stratford Amateur Operatic Society held a very successful practice of “H.M.S. Pinafore” last evening. Mr H. Burmcster, local manager of the Now Zealand Clothing Factory, left yesterday morning on a short business visit to Dunedin. He expects to be away about a week. On 'Monday morning, at the. racecourse, while Mr. T. Carson was leading the racehorse St. Prior, it lashed out and kicked him in the chest, necessitating his taking to his bed. Messrs. Spence and Stanford have just been notified by Mr. C. P. Skerrett, K.C., that the legal argument in the Matakana Island case Bobison v. Sanson, cannot lie taken by Mr. Justice Sim before 2nd May next at Wellington. This is the first date Mr. Justice Sim has available. During the hearing of the motor-car case at Hawera yesterday Mr. Sellar, counsel for the police, remarked that he had. had the pleasure a few days ago of riding in a motor-car travelling 50 miles an hour, “Pleasure, do you call it?” ejaculated Mr. Spence. “I call it a positive crime.” An object of admiration in Broadway yesterday was the new WolseleyDeasy dir of Hr. George Hall s. This car, which is very similar to that belonging to the late Mr. J. E. Mackay, seats five persons, has a horse-powei of 22, and is capable of a speed in the neighbourhood of 60 miles per hour. It is stated that H. Gray applied to the Hawke’s Bay Metropolitan Club for an adjournment of the meeting set. down for Thursday next —when his appeal, will be heard—till a later, date, to enable him to ride at the Masterton meeting, but the committee could not SO6 its way to accodo to his request, nor to another one asking that counsel be allowed to appear for him. The club is deserving of the patronage of the'public, and to those unfanuliar with the segacity of the sheep dog the trials will come as a revelation of what intelligence man’s dumb friend is sometimes possessed.
