MORE POPULATION.
TOO MANY DISTRIBUTORS: TOO .’" r:iT FEW PRODUCERS/, V SEMI-PUBLIC WORKS. (Per Press Association.) Wellington, March 27. Tr. an address , presented to the annual meeting of the .Chamber of Commerce yesterday, the President, Mn H. C. Tewsley, said, with regard to the proposal of the Taupo-Totara Timber Coy., to extend their present private railway to Tanpo, that it was a matter of regret that there was not more scope for private enterprise in. the, matter, of constructing semipublic works of that kind. Another important matter dealt with in the report was the urgent need' of population. If wd contrast the percentage, of producers in this Dominion with that of distributors and manufacturers of secondary products introduced into New Zealand, the want of proportion is at once apparent. That fact ■he held partly accounted for by the high 'cost per head of taxation.
