TOKO NOTES.
(By Our Travelling Reporter.) Tiie, Presbyterian Social Committee desires to thank Mr A. R. Reid for kindly giving them the use of l';is organ on the occasion of their social. The Coronation Hall is now practically free from do'bt. The building was erected in Coronation year, the total-cost with furniture, and piano , 'being £746. This is a very creditable performance, and reflects groat credit on the committee. A dance will be held on the evening of the sports meeting. Great interest is being taken in the settlers’ picnic - and sports, to be held next Thursday. A great feature will be the events for children. These will bo under the direction and charge of Messrs King and Leydoh. Five pounds has been alloted in prizes for these events. Fifty pounds has been spent during the last year in improvements of the recreation grounds and track, and the sanction of the Minister has been .obtained to hold an art union to raise funds to execute • further needed improvements. The Toko school swimming baths have been excavated. Further work is suspended-, however, until a carpenter can be got to board the bottom and sides. The Toko branch of the Fanners’ Union meets on Monday next, on which occasion Air E. Marfoll, Toko Road, will read a very interesting paper. A root-growing competition lias been - organised in connection with the Farmers’ Union, and Mr Newton King will donate a trophy for the best half-acre of mangolds. Mr E. Bayly will give a silver cup for the best three acres of swedes. This branch of the Farmers’ Union is seemingly full of vitality, and promises well; A certain worthy “mine host,” not a hundred miles from Toko, has recently donated £2 2s to-the Toko Farmers’ Union, £5 5s to the Sports Committee, and £2 2s to the new school baths. Long may he reign. The presence of Mr Massey, Leader of the Opposition, is expected at tiie sports meeting.
