SWIMMING NOTES.
(By Araphi Bios.) The first competition for the Handicap Champion Cup is drawing to a close, only three races remaining to be decided—7syds, 50yds, and 440yds. The 75yds distance is to bo swum at the baths to-morrow afternoon. The points for the Cup now stand: Kelly 7 Masters 6 Bennett 3 Kivell 2 The handicaps for to-morrow’s race are: Masters ... scr Kivell ... 3sec. Curtis ... ssec. \ Kelly ... llsec. Bennett ... 14scc. Whittington 20sec. Jebb ... 2lsec. Those “weights” should produce a good finish, in the final. Although Masters went away to the Army Medical Corps camp lie was by no means on the sick list. He won the camp 100yds championship and was second in the 50yds event. This seems to prove that those in the 75yds distance for the Cup will have a good chance of stealing a few points from the runner-up-—it seems that 100yds or more is more in nis line than the ladies’‘distances of 75yds and 50yds. Kivell and Curtis aro handily placed and should contribute, with the run-ner-up, towards the making of a “clinking” finish.
So moto it be! The leader and Bennett are well placed in relation to themselves and to the front-markers.
Bennett lias been doing very well lately and a first place would put him in a nice position in the points list.
Whittington is doing very well thank you with 20sec. He more or less candidly admits that ho is holding himself t for the shorter distances and with his present handicap he will possibly fancy himself. So, also, unfortunately for him, may others. And there ARE others. Jehb, with 21sec, should give good evidence of being in the hunt. There is a first place due to him for good fights in the past. One hopes lie may get it. ; It is not .out of the bounds of possibility. Well inside, rather. Therefore, one may look forward to one of the best races of the series.'
And the public, who appreciate more than anything a -good 'contest of--any sort'; and who have been: turning tip well in the past,'| should be able to ; prove that they arc an actual whole and entire public. The following officials will look after thjqgsv gpwer.ally to the? best of their ability:—Judges, -Messrs D. J. Malone and W. P. Kirkwood; call stewards, Messrs A. J. Davey and C. S. .Potts ,4 Warier, Mr E.’;;.By Stphr.; time'keeper,'’ Mr J. F. . Watson. ’•» ;f ’ 1
One weeps on perusing ■ pifflo of the following order : ? f • There are swimming faces to be held in Taranaki this season. If the weather does not improve the races will' have to be decided in shivers instead of “heats.”
It’s a good enough joke in Jits way. But it inferentially presupposes the possibility of bad weather. The weather is going to be good. IT’S GOT TO.
