SUICIDE IN GAOL.
RECENT 'ARRIVAL TAKES HIS LIFE. HAMMOCK ROPE USED. (Per Press Association.) Auckland, March 19. A Dane named Axel Snertmge committed suicide in Mount Eden Gaol last night. On February 26th he was sentenced at Hamilton to nine years’ imprisonment and ten years’ reformatory treatment for assault at Frankton, in which he attacked with a knife three men, one of whom subsequently died. There was nothing' in the man’s demeanour in gaol indicating a tendency to suicide. He was soon at S o’clock last night by a warder in the usual way. This morning just before 7 o’clock Sncrtingo was found hanging by his hammock rope, dead. Ho had apparently got into the hammock, fastened the rope round his neck, and jumped off, the effect being strangulation, though the neck was not broken. The doctor stated that he had been dead some time.
