CONCILIATION COUNCIL.
TARANAKI CARPENTERS. A silting of the Conciliation Council was held in the Town Hall yesterday morning before Mr. J. Harle, president of the Northern and Taranaki Industrial districts, to consider the carpenters’ and joiners’ dispute. The assessors were:—For the union: Ivor Hazell, Newtown, Wellington, carpenter; George Blatherick, Wellington, carpenter; Charles 1). Arnold, New Plymouth, carpenter. For the respondents (the Taranaki Master Builders’ Association): Win. F. Brooking, John W. Boon, and Fred A. Coleman, builders, New Plymouth. Notices of the dispute were filed on March 4th, and sent out on March 11th. The representatives of the Master Builders’ Association applied for a month’s adjournment, on the grounds that those members of their association living in outlying districts had not had sufficient time to prepare their case. This was opposed by the union assessors, who contended that ample time had been .afforded: them. Considerable discussion took place, but eventually, on the- employers’ assessors stating that if the adjournment asked for were ■granted they were prepared to recommend that wages might bo agreed upon, in reference to the dispute should he payable as from April Ist, the union representatives withdrew their opposition. The Commissioner then adjourned the hearing of the disouto to April loth. “News.”
