The Hood which .happened some time ago, besides washing away the bridges deposited a large quantity of timber of all descriptions in the south-east corner of the abattoir property. I should bo pleased with your permission to get a man to clear it away and burn as much as possible. i A great many posts in the fences all over the abattoir property are broken off just above the ground. I would recommend that totara posts bo put in in future. i The, telephone in the abattoir is in ■ a position where it is very difficult to hear when the slightest wind is blowing ; I would be pleased if it could be moved into a more sheltered and convenient position. Works Committee. The Works Committee reported: The owners of sections 717 and 748 having agreed to bear the cost we recommend the Council to authorise the drainage of this property at once. The work of cleaning a portion of the Kopuatama cemetery has been completed with the exception of logging up and burning. This we have instructed the overseer to proceed with. We have no recommendation to make with, regard to the question of the erection of a public convenience. The question of dealing with storm water in Miranda Street, referred to in the overseer’s report, we recommend bo carried out. We have inspected the approach to King Edward Park and recommend that the.footway on the south side of F<?n,ton Street be extended to the end of the plantation and hence across the street to the entrance gate. Estimated cost, £l6.
, .With regard to the footpath applied lor by Messrs Henry Brown and Co., , ,W,<i recommend that a; footpath be made from Miranda Street to the 'lfirfet l house and* idimg the front of the three houses; this course 'will' give good access to the properties. Estimated cost, ~£4 os. The caretaker of the Kopuatama cemetery has brought under our no-.-tice thd need of a fence around that pa.it of the cemetery reserved for a mortuary chapel, and now laid down us a flower garden. Tin's matter will ( be tiny T)eputy.-M ayor ( , ‘who will reporj. ,to the 'Council. : For the purpose of street maintenance during the winter we recommend the Council to procure forthwith: 100 yards of boulders (to he broken), 200 yards of shingle' (to ho broken), 500 yards of gravel. The Mayor, Or. King, and the overseer have visited the head-work of the water supply and in their opinion the improvements as .suggested by the overseer should be carried out. Approximately the cost of tin’s will be about £BO. Borough Inspector’s Report. 1 . The borough inspector reported that from February' Ist'to the 29th he had impounded 19 head of cattle. Two persons were convicted for riding bicycles on the footpaths and one for failing to keep a light burning after sundown on a scaffolding which was an obstruction on the footpath. For driving vehicles without light two persons had been convicted, one for allowing cattle to wander, one for driving loose horses aand four for keeeping unlicensed dogs. Town Hall Committee. I Wo have considered the questions referred to us and have come to the 'conclusion that the main reason theatrical companies have for passing Stratford is for lack of support.. The main reason given by the picture proprietary is that they could not have a definite night in each week. The lack of suppport given to companies is beyond tlio power of the'Council to : deal with, but your, committee would recommend that the picture proprietary bo offered a fixed night in each week to resume showing at Stratford. Wo have also received complaints re seating accommodation, and the poorly lit condition of the approach to the Town Hall. With regard to the former your committee recommend that an extra four dozen chairs be procured, the present chairs to be overhauled and repaired where necessary. With regard to the light we feel that the complaint is justified and would recommend that lights of 100 c.p. each bo placed opposite Syme’s office and the Co-operative Store Co.’s .store, these lights to ho used only when the hall is engaged. | With reference to the question of fire escapes for the custodian, wo recommend that two windows in the living quarters be bung on the side, and that a ladder to the ground bo bung from each, window.
