There is a good deal of grain in stock and a considerable quantity yet uncut. Ashburton, March 8. The hearing of charges against Thomas Henry Alexander and Anni< - Alexander, his wife, who were a.llegec to have kept liquor, for sale, also tr have sold liquor in a no-license dis- * trict, were remanded to-day before Mr Day, S.M. The charge against . Mrs Alexander was dismissed. Alexander was convicted on the second charge and fined £SO. Auckland, March 8. The Methodist Synod discussed r motion by the Rev. Burton, of Neu Plymouth, expressing alarm at the growing tendency toward militarism, as embodied in recent legislation, emphatically condemning the compulsory military training Act and pledging the church to work for its repeal. The Hon. G. J. Smith moved as an amendment; that while deploring the necessity for the defence forces of the Dominion, Conference endorses the prin- , c ‘iplo of universal military training as the most equitable way of supplying such defence force. The discussion is proceeding. Invercargill, March 8. A lire occurred at midnight in the premises of W. E. 4 Butcher, tailor, which were gutted. The fire spread to the roof of adjoining shops in which the stocks were considerably damaged by smoke and water. The places damaged wore occupied by Rankin (jeweller), Holmes (bootmaker), and Gilchrist (chemist). The total insurances are: Stocks £1250 in the Now Zealand office, £1250 in the South British, £I2OO in the Victoria, £350 in the Commercial Union, £IOO in the Alliance. The buildings are insured for £I2OO in the Norwich Union and £6OO in the Guardian. The loss on the stocks is heavy. Westport, March 8. The unknown man killed by a tramcar :n Wellington yesterday week is almost definitely identified as Henry Galvin. He passed through Westport from Greymouth on February 27th I.»y the Arahura for Wellington, hound for the Wanganui races. He had about £SO in bis possession. A I photograph has been identified by half | a- dozen people. He was a labourer I and single. r
