A disruption occurred between the proprietors and the men on the Newcastle v conciliation committee. The proprietors flatly stated that they would not allow the question of the abolition of the afternoon shift to conic, before the committee for settlement. The miners at Newcastle and Maitland have boon for months agitating, foe,.the abolition, contending that the sh,rft is irksome and robs them of the most advantageous period of the evening. Tho proprietors contend that the. abolition w ould make impossible the working of the pits efficiently. Tho proprietors’ announcement caused consternation amongst the men’s representatives .
