RIFLE SHOOTING.
COO') CHOOTJXG €0X11X17:'• j 'UM/XTHAM. ? LOVE])AY AHEAD. (Per i'Association.) Trout-ham, March. 6. To-day was a busy one on the Trenlham 2 ifle range, as in addition to completing the preliminary stage of the cnumpionship, the Champion Teams Match, United Service Match, and an extra match at 1000 yards have been fired. It has also been a day cf aggregates, the Bisky aggregate, which carries with it the Clarkson Cup, the King’s fifty and the service aggregate having to be made np. Far more important to the majority of competitors was the varying positions of the leaders in the aggregate. Proceedings opened with ■' the Hawke’s Bay Match, at 900 yards. Lovcday, who was tieing with Atkinson in the lead, put on 49 here, and shook off his opponent, who only made 41. Masefield, Milroy and Banks were close in the running. In the match, Clark of Rangitikei, got the possible despite a mirage, four men just missed the possible, and 46’s only just got in a programme of 50 prizes. The Taranaki Match, at 1000 yards, the last in tiie King’s series, was fired immediately afterwards. Again the scores were closely watched. The light was flickering as the youthful Lovcday started in the first batch There was a crowd at his board. The weight of the lead was evidently playing uponl him, and he got 40. The word immediately went round that the shooting was difficult, and al along the mound men broke up badly. Wood (Christchurch) planked on a 49. Soon after, Roots, the 1911 champion, planked on 50, hut it was too late to bo any good to him, except to raisi him a few places in the aggregate, Atkinson only got 36, which spoilt his chance. Masefield got 47, which placed him next to Loveday, hut with a gap of six points. Guy (Kaponga) put on 49, but it did not disturb the aggregate, which left Loveday with a ten to one chance for the Belt, for it is doubtful if any man in New Zealand can give him six points in ten shots at 1000 yards. In the afternoon the Champion Teams Match urns fired. Twenty-twc teams started, but, owing to a misunderstanding a-s to the time limit at 300 yards,, by which they lost five, shofs, the .Now ,Plymouth team retir-■(-a. Other teams' suffered severely range scoring ,w;gs very good, victory resting with the Opaki team, who put up 484 and therefore win the handsome district 'challenge- shield. The highest individual scorer w r as Cliirn side (Karori), wvho put up 101. Duthie (Christchurch) and Baking (Blenheim) both scored the coveted century.
