The third race of the Champion Cup series, over 100yds, comes up for decision at 4. o'clock to-morrow afternoon. It is understood that Masters will bo unable to swim. ’ ■
This is to he regretted from one view point, as the idea, of the Cup is to have all entrants swimming in all the races. \ ■ ;
However, the committee dsc'.'ded, ir the case of Curtis, that the exigencies of time would not permit of the postponement of any of the races, and if •any entrant is unable to start ho ha.f just to recognise the occurence as the fortune of war and at once set himself to win the next race.
On the other hand, the absence of an entrant with so many points in hand should servo as an inducement to the back-markers to make themselves hot for. the race anti secure a more even distribution of the points.
On the particular question, of postponement, entrants inclined to he dissatisfied should remember that if any races were held at odd time's'it would bo impossible to secure the' presence of the oxcellenit hand of officers who at present control-the races, vj tri; /■ < They carry out theit work* With great efficiency, arid if less, yarcfuT; and efficient men were appointed‘swimmers would soon see the enlargement of the sdope|f or ' ■ To -stAint itell tta finish iiv to-mdfrow’s race must bo held by entrants to he highly important, as the handicapper must, of necessity, become cautious about giving too bigdiandicaps to men whoso performances do not dearly iiri dicate their ability.
He will, without doubt, take all reasonable and practicable precautions to guard’ against’ the Cup J being won “easing upj’j) and entrants failing to give him some guiding performances cannot expet'T" other than to 'be set tasks, the accomplishment of which would make the late lamented R. Koran sit up in his grave and squeal.
