(Per Press Association.) Westport, March 4, The steamer Defender, hound from Lyttelton to Hokitika, lost her propeller, oft' Stephen Island yesterday. The steamer Alexander towed her to Westport this morning, and her spare propeller will be fitted hero. Invercargill, March 4. Cecil Newman, HO, single, was drowned at the lliverton Beach on Sunday afternoon while netting for flounders. The holders on the shore end of the net let go, and Newman became entangled, and, owing to the breakers and the weight of Ins clothing, lie was unable to free himself. A gallant effort to .rescue was made by a young man named Sharlmrd, who only regained the shore with difficulty.
