SWIMMING CARNIVAL.

lA SUCCESSFUL GATHERING

The annual evohing open carnival, under the auspices of the Stratford Amateur Swimming Club, was held at the baths last night, in the presence of a very satisfactory audience. The weather remained fair, and spectators saw all the races in comfort; and the air and the water were at temperatures which made swimming a pleasure. Treating by last season's experience, excellent arrangements were made for lighting the bath, and the opinion was freely expressed that nothing further could have been done in the connection.

A number' of visiting swimmers were present, and the Eltham Club was represented by a number of officers, who watched proceedings from the bank. Hawera was represented by Claringbold, John Grant, Spratt, Carr, Joll, West, Jim Grant, and Dewhirst (secretary), all of whom started frequently and swam well. West's item on the chute was highly amusing. Eltham was further represented by the caretaker, Mr W. Kivell, who also entertained those present with some diving and chute work. A fair number from New Plymouth, had promised to compete, but at the last moment foiund themselves unable to make the trip. Their presence would have contributed to the interest of the racing.

The following officers capably carried out their various duties: —-Judge, Mv D. J. Malone; starter, Mr E. B. Stohr; timekeeper, Mr J. F. Watson; call stewards, Messrs A. J. Davey and F. M- MarioW; gate-keepers, Messrs D. Finlay and D. J. Malone; assistant secretary, Mr C. S. Potts. The Stratford Band rendered pleasingly a number of selections during the evening. Coffee and light refreshments were provided for competitors, this being much appreciated. In this department, Mr R. H. Kivell was indefatigable, doing a great deal of hard work.
